My Mother-In-Law Can Beat Up Your Mother-In-Law.
There are a million reasons why I treasure my mother-in-law. She is hilarious and generous and was singing a Katy Perry song the first time I met her. But one of the top 10 reasons why she can beat up any other Mother-In-Law (and probably most of your aunts for that matter) is that she is an amazing cook! One of my favorite recipes of hers is her “soytash”. It’s simple, fresh...

Cherry Almond Pie
I am loving all the summer fruit these days. It is so nice to stroll the grocery store aisle and see blueberries and raspberries and peaches. After my cleanse, I was so excited to bake again. We get together with some of our married friends every two weeks to talk about marriage stuff. I really love being a host because it means baking! I decided to bake a cherry pie for our friends with some...

Adventures in Cleansing: Day 7- The Last Day!
Day 7 started out interestingly. I got up and started drinking water and had about a cup of grapes. All at once, I felt strangely hot. I thought that maybe it was because I was standing by the window or the heater but then I noticed my arms. My elbows and wrists were covered with huge red splotches. I pulled up my pants to see that my knees and ankles were also covered in red hot splotches. I...

Adventures in Cleansing: Day 6
YAY!! Back to solids foods! I was so happy to be eating today. I started my morning off with some stretching and breathing exercises. Then some juice (the one containing fiber) and some grapes. I had to be at work at 10 so I packed some grapes, cherries, carrots and some avocado mixed with some lemon juice and garlic. I ate those, and drank tons of water, over the course of 5 hours and I felt...

Adventures in Cleansing: Day 5
Day 5 was the best day yet. I started the morning with carrot ginger apple juice and did some yoga. I drank lots of water and started running errands. At the end of my night I was feelin pretty good and I decided to eat some watermelon. I’m glad I chose to start eating at night instead of the next morning before work because my tummy was making crazy noises. I know I’m going to...

Adventures in Cleansing: Day 4
Day 4 was a little easier. I tried to sleep in to avoid being hungry. Still drinking lots of fluids. I played tennis with my housemate and was surprised that I had the energy for it. I got a little sick of juicing so I tried to buy some juice. I bought some and took a drink before I realized it contained “fruit puree”…which means it contained FIBER. The whole point of the...

Adventures in Cleansing: Day 3
Day 3 was a little rough. I woke up and immediately drank around 30oz of water. I then juiced some collard greens, apples, rosemary and coconut water. It wasn’t too bad- relatively sweet. The toughest part about drinking these juices is that you have to drink them immediately after you make them so the health properties don’t die before you consume them. I then did yoga for 30...

Adventures in Cleansing: Day 2
Day two was pretty good. When I fell asleep on day 1 I felt so good but I definitely felt less good the next day. I started the day off with a bowl of delicious fruit, then did 30 minutes of yoga and took a brisk walk. I definitely practiced breathing deeply all day which honestly does make a difference.  I’m learning that when I’m getting lots of oxygen and drinking a lot of...

Adventures in Cleansing: Day 1
Lately I’ve been feeling a bit unmotivated. I know I should eat better and push myself harder when I’m exercising but I just can’t seem to get myself there. I was recently scanning through some of my favorite vegan blogs and I came across a cleanse called Kaeng Raeng. It seemed really cool and easy but it was big money so I knew that that wouldn’t fly.  I started...

Hoppin' John
I’ve been trying to use a wider variety of proteins these days. We have a lot of dried beans in our pantry but we usually use them in chili but I decided to break out the black eyed peas for a southern dinner. I have always heard of hoppin’ John but had yet to make it. I used a couple different recipes for this batch and it turned our really great. This would be a great side dish...

Our Recent Adventures in Vegan Baking
Huz has been working at a bakery and learning lots! He came home very inspired to make vegan croissants and I was extremely supportive. There is a lot of Earth Balance involved and the process it’s self is very laborious. I was amazed at the number of steps it actually takes. You have to take all the butter and pound in into a thin square which you eventually envelope with the dough. ...
